12 Days of Raw and Sexy Challenge – Day 10 and Winter Workouts

If you’ve been following along with me and doing the challenge, today is day TEN!  That’s right.  Sunday will be day 12, and then you’ll have officially eaten super healthy, unprocessed foods for the past 12 days.  Not a bad start to the last month of 2010 if you ask me!

Are you getting your workouts in?  I’ve had to mentally pull it together workout wise – it’s FREEZING here.  Freezing.  It’s the thing I like the least about the East Coast.  I will be so so SO excited to wave goodbye to this weather from 30 thousand feet!  Winters here seem as though they have gotten longer and colder… or maybe it’s that I am no longer 5 years old and wishing for snow every day.  I’m wishing for sun. 

Winters are especially depressing when the time changes, and you get up in the dark, go to work in the dark, and by the time you leave work you barely catch the last minutes of the sun going down (again – dark)…followed by just cold after that.  I shouldn’t be able to see my breath in the car when I’m driving.  Brrrrrr!

So working out in winter takes on a new meaning.   You MUST workout.  You must.  I must.  I’m a runner, I love running outside, but not so much when it’s this cold out. 29 degrees? No thanks.   I have a treadmill  (or dreadmill as some people call it) and I also have a gym membership. I’m not a big fan of working out at home – inside.  Some people are, but I get bored easily.  I also thrive in an environment full of other people working out – I find it motivating and fun.  SO the big challenge, is how do I get from my warm house (once I get home from work)  back out into the cold air, into the freezing car, to drive to the gym.   That my friends is called sheer will power. 

I’ve found that during the past 10 days of this challenge, clean eating hasn’t been a problem for me at all.  I pretty much eat the same as I usually do.  Lots of veggies, some fruit, some raw nuts, sprouted grains.  I’ve been craving oatmeal in the mornings, but I know that has everything to do with weather.  I’m going to devise a raw warm breakfast that isn’t grains this weekend.  When I figure that out, I’ll post photos and share!  The Raw and Sexy challenge has made me more aware of what I put into my mouth.  Over the past few months I might have had more raw chocolate, or an extra handful of raw nuts or even some “organic crackers” here and there.  Doing this challenge has made me more mindful, which is great considering the holidays are here!

What I DO need to work on, is finding the inner drive and strength to get my workouts in every day.  Especially if I plan on competing in a bikini competition in the spring.  But this dark cold weather is seriously depressing.   So I’m just going to make myself go to the gym IMMEDIATELY after work.  I might even bring my gym clothes with me to work so I don’t even stop at home – do not pass go – do not collect $200.  😉  Just straight to the gym.  I’ll try that next week and let you know how it works out. 

If you DO run outside in the cold weather, it’s a great idea to warm up inside before you go out.  Run around your house or apartment.  If you have a piece of exercise equipment, use it to warm up for 10 mins before you brave the cold weather.    I tried to run outside in the cold and it looked like I was crying the entire time because my eyes would not stop watering.  Oh well. Next time I’ll run with goggles.
