Foodbuzz 24×24: A Raw Retro Evening

As a Featured Publisher for Foodbuzz, I get the “in” on all of their contests.  Well, a few weeks ago I submitted a dinner party proposal to Foodbuzz for their 24×24 Contest, and TA DA! My proposal was selected!  In turn, I needed to host this dinner last night, Saturday August 27th.  So what exactly did I propose?

Ladies and Gents, I give you:

As most of you know, I’ve recently moved into a new apartment in San Diego in the rawsome neighborhood of South Park.  The houses here are older and some are even historic.  They have a cool retro vibe to them.  I have a sea-foam green counter top!  (Seriously, I do, and I love it.) Fully inspired by the retro vibe, I wrote up a menu for A Raw Retro Evening.   What if I made the old fashioned foods RAW?  What if I put a bit of a modern twist on them?  I wanted to show how a “retro” housewife could have put together a Raw dinner party.  What was on the menu back in the day and how would it need to be modified in order for it to be RAWMAZING???

I remember my Mom’s dinner parties when I was growing up…I remember mixed nuts, pickles, deviled eggs, stuffed tomatoes….so I called my Mom for some menu brainstorming.  The she recalled the menu of my Grandmother’s dinner parties!  That, plus some internet research on the history of food by decade, plus my current favorites…and I put together A Raw Retro Evening for my friends.

I am a HUGE fan of finger foods for dinner parties.  They have the cocktail party vibe, they’re small enough to have a couple bites without having to indulge in a large portion, and they’re fun!  No plate? No problem!

Here was the menu my guests enjoyed last night:

  • Raw Sexy Nuts
  • Foxy Mama Veggies with Raw Dill and Kalamata Cheeze
  • Sunshine Stuffed Tomatoes
  • Mondo Cool Mushrooms
  • Raw Royale with Sexy Sauce
  • Groovy Mac and Not Cheese
  • Raw Sexy Balls (can you dig it?!?)
  • Cold As Ice Pops
  • Surprise Item: Raw Chocolate Strawberry Mousse Pie

Raw Sexy Nuts

Raw almonds, organic herbs, organic evoo (extra virgin olive oil)

Foxy Mama Veggies with Raw Dill Cheeze and Kalamata Cheeze
Celery, cucumbers, raw cashews, lemon juice, sea salt, dill; Raw sesame seeds, sea salt and kalamata olives

Sunshine Stuffed Tomatoes

Mondo Cool Mushrooms

Raw Royale with Sexy Sauce

Groovy Mac and Not Cheese
Zucchini, daikon and carrot noodles. Not cheese: raw cashews, hemp hearts, nutritional yeast, lemon juice, sea salt

Raw Sexy Balls (can you dig it!?!)

Cold As Ice Pops
Blends of almond milk, banana, cacao, strawberries, cashews, agave, dates, hemp hearts

And what would a raw party be without one extra surprise raw dessert???  I just couldn’t help myself!

I give you the Pièce de résistance…
Raw Chocolate Strawberry Mousse Pie.
Let me say that one again (just for special effect) 🙂

I MADE ENOUGH FOOD TO FEED AN ARMY!  I think it’s that whole Half Irish Half Italian Heritage of mine…I don’t know how to make food for any less than 50 people. 😉

The Mondo Cool Mushrooms were a huge hit, as was the Raw Royale with Sexy Sauce (raw burgers) and the Groovy Mac and Not Cheese.

My Raw Sexy Balls always seem to have a life of their own – I have to say I’m really proud of how all of my desserts turned out, as well as the nut and seed cheeses.   The Sunshine Stuffed Tomatoes had a kick to them (like a serious boot in the pants…KICK!) and everyone gave me a thumbs up!

In addition to all of the fabulous food, I was fortunate enough to have my friend Dave, owner of  Leucadia Red wines at my dinner party.

These wines are incredible.  I’m particularly fond of the Cabernet.  I don’t know all of the wine lingo that fancy gargling-and-spitting wine people use but I do remember describing this as full bodied, super smooth, the perfect blend of spice and fruit, without being too spicy (or too fruity)…such a smooth finish to it.  I’m a huge fan.  Besides being an amazing wine – check out the art on the labels!!!!!!!!!  It takes cool to a whole new level.

Wine and raw food go together so well – it’s quite possibly a match made in foodie heaven.
The Leucadia Red Sparkling Wine was a fan favorite.  I’m so glad that all of my friends had the opportunity to sample these wines along with the raw delights. You can check out more of Dave’s fantastic wine here:   Leucadia Red

Last nights Raw Retro Evening was really delicious – in food and in friends.  I know I am still fairly new to this beautiful state, but I’ve been blessed to meet some phenomenal, stunning, wonderful, generous, kind, funny, incredible, fantastic, amazing AWESOME people.

I am so excited to bring Raw Food to everyone in San Diego and to help it make a splash on the scene in a big, bold, healthy, classy and stylish way.  Raw fruits and veggies from nature deserve nothing less.  It’s God’s perfect food if you ask me.

Here is a Raw Retro Montage from last night – hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed being part of the moment.

Beautiful Food.
Beautiful Friends.
Raw IS most definitely SEXY.
