Healthy & Safe Tips for July 4th Weekend

I just want to wish all of you a wonderful, happy and SAFE July 4th weekend!  I hope you enjoy your time with family and friends.  I whipped up a fun red, white and blue breakfast this morning!

Remember, if you are going to a cookout or BBQ and are unsure if there will be healthy options, BRING YOUR OWN! Prepare a tray of veggies and your favorite dip to take with you, take a hummus tray or make a large fruit salad,a large veggie salad, take veggie burgers with you, whatever your favorite veggie dish is – make it and take it!  It ensures that you’ll have something healthy and delicious to eat, and it also introduces others to the awesome world of a plant based diet.  Giving people delicious food is always the best way to introduce them to your veggified world! You might be surprised at how many people want to try your dish!

If you are trying to avoid alcohol, an easy way to do it is to just have a “mocktail” in your hand.  Make a drink of cranberry juice and club soda with a slice of lime, and no one will know you’re not drinking.  I’ve actually asked a bartender for a vodka cranberry and then whispered “and hold the vodka”.  Or say you’re training for a marathon.  Of course you can always just tell people that you aren’t drinking, but some people aren’t very receptive to that, or they will project a lot of attention your way for not going along with the herd (their issue – not yours), so sometimes it’s easy to just have a non-alcoholic drink in your hand at all times.  It’s the stealthy way of navigating social functions when you’re not drinking and BONUS – you get to drive home because you’re sober!  And you can probably drive some other people home too. 😉  Check out Pinterest for a ton of delicious mocktail recipes like this one:

Speaking of which – DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE.  It’s not a joke.  You’re not only playing roulette with your life, but with the lives of everyone else on the road.  I’ve seen first hand what a drunk driver can do to someone’s life and no one should have to experience that. So have fun, be safe, and BE SMART.  If you’ve had too much to drink, call a taxi, call Uber, ask a friend for a ride, sleep on a couch, call a tow truck (did you know you can do that?! ) and just say your car broke down – not only will your car get home but you’ll get a ride home too.  It’s going to cost you a few dollars for that option, but it’s better than injuring or killing someone. Just don’t drink and drive. Period.

Lastly, leave the fireworks to the professionals. I don’t want my readers blowing themselves up. Look out for your pets and your dogs – they can be terrified from the sound of fireworks and a lot of people lose their dogs on 4th of July because they take off and run!  Keep them inside!  Try using a ThunderShirt for them, it helps with dog anxiety.

Stay safe, have fun and remember…

Peace, love and veggies!
