2018 is right around the corner and with that comes thoughts of the future, plans, ideas, goals and dreams…maybe even some resolutions. But I like to reflect on the year that’s passed. I like to reflect on my life right up to this very moment, and write down my Reverse Bucket List.
A Reverse Bucket List is a list of all of your achievements, successes and accomplishments. They don’t have to be milestone achievements either. Just begin by making a list of all the stuff you’ve already done. Did you finish school? Get a new job? Run your first 5k? Did you try something new? Did you decide to take care of your health this past year and create new healthy habits?
List all of the small stuff too like the day you decided to make that phone call to your friend and work things out. Did you forgive someone? Did you let go? Did you stand up for yourself? Did you stand up for a cause?
Did you volunteer or help someone in need?
Put all of these warm fuzzies on your list. No matter how “small” or “insignificant” they may seem, they aren’t. They’re the real deal.
This is truly a writing exercise in gratitude and reflection. You will be surprised at how long your list is! Don’t be modest. Once you’ve taken the time to look back on where you’ve been and how much you’ve accomplished, you’ll have foundation to really look forward and write out your goals for the future.
It’s easy to live in the future. It’s easy to say things like, “tomorrow I’ll go and do this” but tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. We have today. So today, take some time to write down your accomplishments – big and small. Pat yourself on the back.
Take stock of all that you have to be thankful for, and then from that foundation, look ahead and dream. Dream big, friends! If you can see it, you can achieve it. Visualize yourself in the future and then make it happen. Take these last 6 weeks of 2017 and make them count.
