I founded Raw Is Sexy® in 2009 to help others easily incorporate more natural, whole plant based foods into their daily lives. What I learned on my journey has transformed my health, my life and the lives of those around me and I’m thrilled to be able to share that with you!
THE ROAD WASN’T EASY
I wasn’t always the picture of vibrant health. I didn’t always feel sexy or confident in my own skin. Now that I’ve been plant-based for almost a decade, people I meet usually assume that I’ve always looked good. Not the case. I used to joke that any “bad” photos of me were eaten by a tiger (because I wouldn’t share them with anyone), but in fact they were just being saved for the right time, so that I could share them with you. By being transparent about my struggle and journey – I can save you time, frustration, despair and heartache. I can save you from having to walk a similar path and if you are currently on that path, I can help you get off of it. Here is a flashback of a good 8-10 years of yo-yo dieting and battling with my weight.
I struggled with disordered eating and had issues surrounding food for years. I had a raging sweet tooth and always felt out of control when it came to processed sweets. It was difficult for me to have just one cookie or donut; I wanted to have six. I would eat heavier foods like pizza and pasta and never felt satisfied. I always felt uncomfortably full and then I would feel bad about myself.
In my teenage years I was encouraged to go into modeling because I was tall and athletic. I didn’t have the thickest of skin and negative comments, rejection, and not knowing my own worth and value led me to struggle constantly with the reflection looking back at me in the mirror. The experience took a toll on my psyche and worsened my relationship with food.
I was also an emotional eater. I ate to feel comfort. I ate to feel love. Then I just felt awful. I was trying to fill a void with food. It was a destructive cycle. I was hurting myself on the inside to achieve a certain image on the outside. My weight continually went up and down. I tried everything from shakes to fad diets to fat burner pills. I’d get some results and lose some weight, but the moment I stopped taking the pills or drinking the shakes, the weight came back on. So much for a “quick fix”! The only thing quick about it is how quickly it stops working. It was the opposite of healthy.
I changed up my diet when the big fat-free craze hit. I was eating fat-free this and that, and eating the Standard American Diet (SAD). I thought I was eating healthy. I assumed that my metabolism was slowing down – but I knew there had to be another answer. Something inside me told me that this couldn’t be it. There had to be a solution.
I’ve been vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, fruitarian – you name it, I tried it. But those labels didn’t make me healthy, there’s plenty of processed veggie junk food out there and that wasn’t getting me to my goal either. You can be an unhealthy vegan. You can be an unhealthy vegetarian. The label doesn’t automatically mean healthy…it’s the food you are choosing that makes all the difference. After much searching and research, in a last ditch effort to lose some weight…
I DISCOVERED RAW FOODS AND A PLANT BASED LIFESTYLE!
I slowly transitioned to a high raw, whole foods, plant based lifestyle. I was eating as much as I wanted, and the weight was disappearing. My energy levels skyrocketed. My seasonal sinus infections disappeared. I stopped getting sick. One of the best parts about living a whole foods, plant based lifestyle is there is zero guilt. I didn’t have to feel “bad” about eating raw foods because they are all natural, full of amazing vitamins and minerals which made me feel good about my choices. I felt satiated after eating because my body was getting the nutrition it needed. Zero guilt is important for me, especially coming from a background of disordered eating. I need to mentally feel great about what I am eating and with fruits and vegetables, feeling great is the only option. When I saw the weight coming off naturally, I knew I had found the solution.
I eat a whole food, plant based diet which gives me the variety and flexibility I need to sustain a healthy lifestyle for LIFE!
I lost 25-30 lbs and have kept it off for almost a decade!
I found myself loving fitness and physical activity after I changed my diet. Eating vibrant food gives me so much energy that I just naturally find myself moving every day. I always want to do something, whether it’s a run, hike, weight training, yoga, rock climbing or I’m just out there shoveling snow – I now always have abundant energy to move my body and do the things I was put on this earth to do. That’s what is most important. Working out helps me feel stress-free and relaxed. It helps me feel confident and sassy! It helps me have more energy and increased mental clarity. Being physically fit enough to climb a mountain is amazing. How we look as a result of our physical activity is a bonus! With the proper combination of whole plant based foods and fitness, you can achieve both! I’m living proof.

Get away from the processed foods, fast foods and junk foods. Eat more veggies. Be kind to yourself. There is zero judgment here. Only the desire to see you become the very best version of you. Your health is too important to let one more day pass you by.
